The three types of Romanian tourists: lucky, very lucky, and those who make their own luck
When we talk about Romanian tourists, we should recognize which category is the luckiest of them all. As you will see, there are three major categories… maybe four.

Extra-salary benefits provided by employers are one great option for Romanian employees to buy holidays. These are the lucky ones. On the platform BenefitOnline.ro, in the first 5 months of the year alone, employees made about 9,000 transactions in the Tourism section and bought holidays worth over RON 7 million, more than 75 percent more than last year.

In 2018, over 21,000 transactions were conducted in the Romanian Tourism section through BenefitOnline.ro, worth RON 4 million.

“Vacations paid out of extra-salary benefits from employers are the stars among employees’ preferences on the BenefitOnline.ro platform. Since the beginning of the year, the Tourism category has reached the top 3 benefits chosen by employees, by amount spent, after meal vouchers and gifts. Last year holidays had been in 5th place,” says Stelian Bogza, co-founder of BenefitOnline.ro.

Holidays in Romania can be accessed through holiday vouchers on the BenefitOnline.ro platform. Most employees choose this option, as holiday vouchers benefit from the same tax regime as meal vouchers, with zero employer taxes and only 10 percent income tax for employees.

The most popular destinations among employees are the Prahova Valley, the Romanian seaside, the Danube Delta, Cluj-Napoca and Sighisoara.

“Many of the employees have planned their holidays also according to the music festivals. That’s why Cluj County, where two important international events such as Untold and Electric Castle are taking place, is at the top of the city break choices. For the same reason, the seaside, where festivals such as Neversea or Vama Veche are held, is also chosen as a destination for summer stays at the beach and as a city break destination around musical events,” says Stelian Bogza.

Romanian tourists working in the public sector

Currently, the average of a holiday paid from the benefit budget through holiday vouchers is RON 324. When employees choose to pay for holidays purchased on the BenefitOnline.ro platform with their own money, their value doubles. The average of a holiday paid out of personal money is RON 703.

Apart from these employees who have some benefits are the public sector employees who, by law, receive holiday vouchers with a value of RON 1,450 paid by the state. But the problem in their cases is that the tour operators want to limit the usage of these vouchers only in the extra-season.

The high payer: “I’ve made my own luck”

On the other side, there is another category of tourists: those who like to travel to multiple countries and for whom money is not a problem.

“The profile of this Romanian tourist fits perfectly with the one that likes to travel in holiday circuits. Expensive ones.

”Our customers choose classic circuits designed to visit the top attractions of a country within a shorter time frame at a reasonable budget, as well as multi-country circuits that combine experiences from two or more countries. Not even the collection of Adventure or Safari Circuits is neglected by tourists who choose such programs for adrenaline and memorable experiences. We noticed that more and more customers want to explore the world by avoiding busy classics, so they choose the “off the beaten track” circuits,” says Sorin Stoica, the CEO of Eturia.

Both couples and single people represent the target audience for circuit-breaks. The Romanian tourist who chooses Circuits with or without an attendant likes to travel alongside other tourists to share the enthusiasm of discovering the place. Families with children older than 10 years choose circuits as well – this is the age at which children start to be interested in civilizations or targets, their number increasing every year.

“There are multiple advantages to a circuit versus a city + beach vacation or another type of stay. Only within a circuit can you truly discover a destination, the itineraries are designed to include all the attractions to be seen at the destination. Our offers include all the costs and fees associated with package travel: accommodation, air tickets and airport taxes, meals, transfers and tours according to the program, entrance fees to touristic objectives, complex travel insurance, group tours include even the tips that are given to local drivers and guides,” says Sorin Stoica.

The fourth category is filled with people like yours truly, who has to pay for his own holiday, like a simpleton. That’s why we are maybe the luckiest ones, because we really enjoy our holidays. We have to!
