Spreading out along the right bank of the Tagus, its downtown, the Baixa, is located in the 18th-century area around Rossio. East of the arcade Praça do Comércio, are the medieval quarters of Alfama and Mouraria, crowned by the magnificent St. George‘s Castle. To the west lie Bairro Alto and Madragoa, with their typical streets, and on the western extreme is Belém, with its Belém Tower, (the sentinel over the Tagus river that protects the entrance into Lisbon), the Jerónimos Monastery (masterpieces of Manueline architecture and classified in UNESCO‘s International Heritage list) and the Cultural Center of Belém.

Santa Maria de Belém, or just Belém is a parish of Lisbon famous as the place from which many of the great Portuguese explorers set off on their voyages of discovery. In particular, it is the place from which Vasco da Gama departed for India in 1497. It is also a former royal residence and features the 17th-18th century Belém Palace, former royal residence and now occupied by the President of Portugal, and also nearby, in the Ajuda Parish, there is the Ajuda Palace, begun in 1802 but never completed. Perhaps Belém‘s most famous feature is its tower, Torre de Belém, whose image is much used by Lisbon‘s tourist board. The tower was built as a fortified lighthouse late in the reign of Dom Manuel (1515–1520) to guard the entrance to the port at Belém. It stood on a little island in right side of the Tagus, surrounded by water.

Belem Tower is a fortified tower located in the Belem district of Lisbon, Portugal. It is an UNESCO World Heritage Site because of the significant role it played in the Portuguese maritime discoveries of the era of the Age of Discoveries. The tower was commissioned by King John II to be both part of a defense system at the mouth of the Tagus River and a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon. The tower was built in the early sixteenth century and is a prominent example of the Portuguese Manueline style, but it also incorporates hints of other architectural styles. The structure was built from lioz limestone and is composed of a bastion and the 30 meter four story tower. It has incorrectly been stated that the tower was built in the middle of the Tagus and now sits near the shore because the river was redirected after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. In fact, the tower was built on a small island in the Tagus River near the Lisbon shore.

Setubal is the main city in Setúbal Municipality in Portugal. The seat of the municipality is the city of Setubal, located on the northern bank of the Sado River estuary, approximately 50 km south of Portugal‘s capital, Lisbon. It is also the seat of the district of Setubal.
In the beginning of the 20th century, Setúbal was an important center of Portugal‘s fishing industry. The main historical monument of the city of Setúbal is the Monastery of Jesus, with a 15th-16th century church that represents one of the first buildings in the Portuguese late Gothic style known as Manueline. Also of interest are the São Julião Church, also with Manueline portals. The Castelo de São Filipe, is a 16th-17th century fortress on the north bank of the Sado river, overseeing the city. The fortress was converted into a luxury hotel.

Evora is located in the Alentejo province, a region of wide plains to the south of the Tagus River (Rio Tejo in Portuguese). The distance from the capital, Lisbon, is some 130 km. Evora is ranked number two in the Portuguese most livable cities survey of living conditions. Due to its well-preserved old town centre, still partially enclosed by medieval walls, and a large number of monuments dating from various historical periods, including a Roman Temple, Evora is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Behind the museum, the gardens of the old Episcopal palace are laid out on several staggered terraces forming a charming 17C ensemble, with trimmed hedges, flower beds, ornamental ponds and Baroque statues. An avenue runs alongside the Lake of Crowns. The avenue is bordered with statues - the Apostles on the right facing the Kings of Portugal on the left. Note the irony in the way the sculptor depicted the Kings of Spain who ruled Portugal.

Porto, also known as Oporto, is Portugal‘s second city and the capital of Norte region. It is, along with Lisbon, one of Portugal‘s two global cities. The city is located in the estuary of the Douro river, in northern Portugal. Being the largest city in the region, it is considered its economic and cultural heart. The historic centre of Porto was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. One of Portugal‘s most internationally famous products, Port wine, is named after the city because it is produced in, and shipped from the area or, more precisely, from Vila Nova de Gaia, a city just across the river which belongs to the same conurbation. The Latin name of Porto, Portus Cale, is the origin of the name Portugal for the whole country.

Located in west central Portugal, in the region of Leiria and approximately 110 kilometers north of Lisbon, the small town of Fatima is one of the most visited Marian shrines in the world today. But unlike many of Europe‘s great Marian pilgrimage sites, the sanctity of Fatima dates not from the Middle Ages but only from early in the 20th century. Fatima was then a small rural village in a rocky region whose main product was olive oil. There are no historical or legendary accounts of the village or surrounding area having any religious importance in earlier times. In 1917 a series of apparitions were seen by three young children that were to profoundly alter both their own lives and the atmosphere of the peasant village.

Obidos is located in the subregion Oeste and district of Leiria, in Portugal. The town has a magnificent castle, now hosting a pousada. The municipality is also home to the well known and prestigious Praia D‘el Rey golf complex, one of the top golf resorts in Europe. The town of Obidos is located on a hill and is still encircled by a fortified wall. The well preserved mediaeval look of its streets, squares, walls and its massive castle have turned the picturesque village into a preferred tourist attraction in Portugal. If visiting, it is compulsory to try the local cherry liquor known as ginjinha.
